About the Artist

An interest in the geometry of change has led me to paint old store fronts, abandoned mills, deteriorating rail yards, gas stations, diners and farm buildings. These paintings bring to the viewer the colors and shapes of the Mid-Atlantic region. In this way I record the rapidly changing environment of the area, sometimes documenting ways of life that are evolving before our eyes.

My work is representational consisting of landscape, portrait, figure, and still-life. I work primarily in oil, but also in acrylic, watercolor and print media. I enjoy the challenge of plein-air painting, catching the light, finding the essentials, not to mention avoiding poison ivy and insects, surviving the heat or cold, the wind, and the advice of passers by.

Active in the visual arts since 1977, I have participated extensively in juried group shows and have received significant awards. My paintings have been exhibited at Government House in Annapolis, Maryland, the National Arts Club in New York City, and the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia. My work has appeared in galleries and art centers throughout Maryland and Virginia. My gallery representation has been at Antreasian Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland and at East Of The Bay Gallery in North East, Maryland.

Born in the Netherlands, I came to the United States as a war refugee in 1946. I attended high school and college in New York City and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from American University in Washington, D.C. I have taught art at the Maryland College of Art and Design, the Barrie School in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Cecil Community College in North East, Maryland. Currently I am a docent at the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, Delaware.
